Why Kickstand Exists

Kickstand is an independent research and engineering organization. We exist to support ambitious ideas—in software, simulation, AI, and open-source engineering tools—until they can stand on their own.

Origin of the name

The name started as a joke. Years ago, a storm left a gutter hanging from a two-story house. It leaned against the roof for months like a giant kickstand. Friends would ask about it, and the answer became: "That's the house's kickstand."

The joke stuck. Over time, the meaning changed.

Today, Kickstand exists for the same reason a real kickstand does:

A kickstand...

  • supports something while ideas grow.
  • lets something else stand on its own.
  • doesn't get the credit.
  • is temporary.
  • exists so something bigger can move forward.

It's not the destination.

It's not the engine or pedals.

It's not even the thing people admire.

It's just...

...the thing that quietly keeps everything from falling over while the important work happens.

Our logo is an ensō — a circle drawn in a single, unhurried brushstroke. In Zen, it's a small act of practice: what the brush leaves behind is a record of the mind that made it. We took it as a mark of how we want to work.

  • continuous improvement
  • exploration
  • imperfection
  • creativity
  • mastery through practice

Kickstand builds practical software, simulations, AI systems, and open-source engineering tools that help ambitious ideas stand on their own.
